Exhibitions

Brazil's history before 1889 is rarely presented to audiences in the United States through original material. Coins, printed books, manuscripts, maps, and arms carry the evidence of that history in a form visitors can examine directly: the workings of colonial administration, the reach of Atlantic commerce, the cartography of a coastline, and the institutions of the Empire.

Miami's cultural ties to Latin America make it a considered place to begin. The aim of a pilot exhibition is modest and practical: to test how this material reads for a general public, to build interpretation in English and Portuguese, and to establish the conservation and documentation standards on which any later exhibition would depend.

Planning assumes an approximately 30–40-object selection, an approximate planning range rather than a confirmed checklist, arranged across the Collection's five categories: Coins & Numismatics, Rare Books, Manuscripts, Maps & Cartography, and Arms & Artifacts. Objects may be drawn from the wider Collection and are not limited to the selected online holdings published here.

A scholarly catalog, a programme of lectures, and educational events for schools and university groups are intended but provisional. None has been commissioned, scheduled, or confirmed, and no publication date exists for the catalog. Details will be posted here as they are settled.
