1855 Gold 5000 Réis Dom Pedro II

Struck at the Rio de Janeiro Mint in 1855, this 5000 réis piece belongs to the gold series introduced under the monetary reform of 1849, which redefined the milréis and established the 5000, 10000, and 20000 réis denominations that circulated until the end of the Empire. At 917/1000 fineness, the issue reflected the Empire's effort to place Brazilian currency on a stable, internationally legible standard.

The obverse carries the mature bearded portrait of Dom Pedro II, the second-reign effigy that replaced the youthful head of the early 1840s. The Emperor, who had assumed full powers in 1840, is presented without laurel or crown, in the sober manner favored by the imperial court, an image of constitutional monarchy rather than martial triumph. The reverse bears the crowned imperial arms within a wreath, with the value and date.

The Rio de Janeiro Mint, founded in 1703, remained the principal source of Brazilian coinage throughout the imperial period. By the 1850s its engravers and presses were producing gold of consistently high technical quality, and pieces of this series are notable for sharp relief and carefully finished fields.

The 1850s were years of consolidation for the Empire: the end of the transatlantic slave trade in 1850, the Commercial Code of the same year, and the expansion of coffee exports all increased demand for reliable specie.
