Struck in 1725, this gold Half Dobrão was issued during the reign of Dom João V (1706–1750), at a time when Brazil formed part of the Portuguese Crown's overseas dominions. Brazil possessed no separate political status and was governed directly in the name of the king through royal officials and institutions based in Lisbon.

The coin belongs to the high point of the Brazilian gold cycle, following the discoveries in Minas Gerais at the turn of the eighteenth century.
